AA/10/AS/20/SEC - Recommendations for COVID-19 Adjustments

Effective Spring 2020

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University, Stanislaus (AS) recommend that all faculty have the right to determine whether the results of their surveys of student perceptions of teaching during spring 2020, summer 2020, and potentially fall 2020 will be placed in their Personnel Action File; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the AS recommend that no faculty be penalized in any way for exercising their right to choose not to include the results of their surveys of student perceptions of teaching in their Personnel Action File during spring 2020, summer 2020, and potentially fall 2020; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the AS commend University Administration for agreeing to approve as a matter of course, and with no negative effect to their eventual tenure review, all applications from tenure-track faculty who wish to add an additional year to their time to tenure because of the COVID-19 pandemic; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the AS commend the Provost for agreeing to place a letter in every faculty member’s Personnel Action File (PAF) that provides the context for understanding the circumstances surrounding the periods including spring 2020, summer 2020, and potentially fall 2020. Said letter would be for ALL faculty files because teaching, research and service are all being affected during these periods; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the AS thank our colleagues in the Office of Information Technology and the Office of Academic Technology for their efforts to date and ask for their continued work to ensure that the resources needed in terms of instructional material, hardware and software be accurately determined and provided and that training facilities on the use of these be made readily available to faculty; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the AS assert that all content created by faculty remains, as usual, the sole property of the creator; and be it further

RESOLVED: That Academic Administration recognize that faculty maintain control of the curriculum and that faculty know what works best for higher education and our students. At the conclusion of the COVID-19 emergency, AS strongly asserts the need for the University to restore appropriate pedagogical approaches to instruction, including return to the campus- approved instructional modalities for each course.

RATIONALE: The 2020 worldwide pandemic caused by COVID-19 has resulted in a plethora of emergency measures for Stanislaus State faculty, staff and students. Due to this emergency, measures should be taken to maintain instructional integrity in the immediate and long-term and ensure that our university can act in support of all of its members-academically, professionally, and personally. We have an obligation to do so, per our mission. This resolution proposes some characteristics of a successful plan to minimize the impact of the emergency.

Review History: Approved by the Academic Senate on April 16, 2020 Approved by President Ellen Junn on April 22, 2020
