AA/13/AS/19/UEPC - Course Module Scheduling Policy Effective Summer 2026 Resolved: That California State University, Stanislaus revise the Course Module Scheduling Policy (AA/13/AS/19/UEPC) to allow 3-unit and 4-unit, once-a-week courses to be offered in Stockton before 4 p.m. on weekdays regardless of discipline or cohort-status;
Resolved: That the once-a-week Stockton courses be scheduled during the same time slots (M, T, W, R, or F) currently identified for “cohort-based” programs;
Resolved: That the scheduling office create new one-day-a-week and two-day-a-week time slots during the daytime (M-F) for 3- and 4-unit courses in Stockton only;
Resolved: Because these new time slots will be recognized as approved time slots for Stockton courses, they will obtain the same scheduling priority as those offered in approved 2- and 3-day a week formats. As the policy indicates, any other courses offered outside of these approved time slots will require using an Exception Request Form submitted to the college dean and will be considered after all courses in approved time modules have been scheduled; and
Resolved: That this revision take effect in advance of the first class scheduling period after approval.
Resolved: That this policy be reviewed by UEPC two years after implementation to assess its effectiveness.
Rationale: Time modules were developed to support efficient use of classroom space and to best serve student and faculty needs. Currently the class scheduling policy is applied equally to offerings at all instructional locations, and only courses tied to “cohorts” are pre-approved to be offered during the designated 3-unit, 1-day formats in the daytime. The ability to easily plan for and schedule some non-cohort courses in 1-day-a-week and 2-days-a-week modules during the day (before 4 p.m.) can better serve Stockton students who are engaged in paid work and/or have family care responsibilities that require daytime scheduling flexibility. Given the relatively small number of courses offered in Stockton, and the increasing ability for Stockton programs to collaborate on schedule planning, the scheduling of these once-a-week and twice-a-week courses should be manageable for programs and the scheduling office and should not require Exception Requests and delayed course placement. Furthermore, for faculty who primarily teach in Turlock, there are myriad benefits to having more options to teach once-a-week and twice-a-week courses in Stockton. The once-a-week and twice-a-week courses could also prove of interest to Turlock-based students who may be able to commute to Stockton for a specific desired course.
Course Module Scheduling Policy
-
The following course time modules will be used for classrooms, see attached grid. Scheduling of rooms outfitted with specialized equipment, e.g. fume hoods, pianos, etc., shall be exempt from the grid.
-
Courses (face-to-face or hybrid) scheduled within the time modules on the grid will be placed first. Exceptions must be requested using an Exception Request Form submitted to the college dean and will be considered after all courses in approved time modules have been scheduled.
-
Hybrid classes must indicate which days/times they will meet.
-
Normally, no more than 80% of a department schedule shall have start times between 9 and 2 on M-R, unless rooms are available after normal scheduling.
- As is indicated in the time modules for course scheduling, a minimum of 10 minutes is provided between scheduled class sections to allow time for faculty and students to transition out of and into classes. If an instructor submits an Exception Request Form that would cause fewer than 10 minutes of transition time between classes, approvals must be obtained from all impacted course instructors and department chairs in addition to relevant deans. Given the importance of this transition time for students and faculty, it should be rare that such exceptions would be approved. Without such an approved request, at least 10 minutes must be allotted between the end and start of classes in a given room.
- This policy will be reviewed by the UEPC every five years.
