Department of Kinesiology Mission Statement
The mission of the faculty of the Department of Kinesiology is to professionally prepare students to contribute positively to the health and well-being of members of society as advocates for a physically active lifestyle, and preventative health methods. We strive to promote life-long learning and service to diverse populations. Additionally, the department enriches the overall education of all students at Stanislaus State through its activity courses and upper- and lower-division general education course offerings.
This mission is accomplished through a series of foundational courses, assignments and experiences specific to one of three fields of study:
- Exercise Science
- Health Promotion
- Single Subject Matter Preparation Program
Requirements
- Advising is mandatory for all majors in this degree program. Please contact the department office either by telephone or email for information on academic advising.
- All enrollment requirements to the Kinesiology Major must be completed prior to enrolling in any upper-division courses. You will be blocked from enrolling in any and all upper-division courses within the major when you try to register for classes as of fall 2016, if the enrollment requirements are not completed. This registration block will remain in effect for any subsequent semesters until all of the enrollment requirements to the major are completed.
- Students interested in obtaining a teaching credential are strongly advised to confer with the Department of Teacher Education program adviser at the beginning of the junior year. An application for admission into the teacher education program is available from the Department of Teacher Education.
- Each course counted toward the major, including prerequisites, must be completed with a grade of C- (1.7) or higher. All courses counted toward the major, including prerequisites, must be taken on a letter grade basis.

Teaching Credentials
Majors in kinesiology interested in the single subject credential are referred to the Teacher Education section of this catalog.
Before admission to the Single Subject Credential Program, students must be cleared for subject matter competence. The Department of Kinesiology will certify students for competence in appropriate subject matter content when they:
- Complete an approved California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Single Subject Matter Preparation Program in Physical Education, or
- Earn a passing score on the Single Subject Examination in Physical Education, Test #09 and the CSET Examination in Physical Education.
Program Goals
- Content Knowledge: Students will demonstrate and apply knowledge and disciplinary concepts related to the field of Kinesiology.
- Communication Skills: Students will develop oral, written, Adan interpersonal communication skills.
- Critical Thinking: Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills including the ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information to make sound decisions and solve problems as they apply to the field of Kinesiology.
- Professionalism: Students will demonstrate professional and ethical practices in the areas of communication, conduct, presentation, and preparation.
Concentration Mission Statements and Program Learning Outcomes
Exercise Science Mission Statement
The purpose of the Exercise Science Concentration is to provide students with learning opportunities, which professionally prepare them to guide others toward acquiring and achieving goals for optimal physical health, fitness, and sport performance.
This degree path will prepare individuals to enter directly into careers such as personal fitness training, strength and conditioning coaching, and lifestyle coaching. This concentration also prepares students to enter into graduate programs and professional schools in order to pursue careers in biomechanics, exercise physiology, nutrition, and allied health science fields such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, orthotics and prosthetics, and chiropractic.
Exercise Science Program Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate and apply exercise science content knowledge through taking exams, completing assignments including laboratory write-ups, and participating in course activities.
- Student will develop effective communication skills through oral presentations, handouts for their peers, and small group discussion.
- Students will develop effective leadership and interpersonal communication skills through assignments, which require individual and group assessment and consultation.
- Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills through the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data in order to design and implement plans for exercise prescription, rehabilitation, and performance outcomes.
- Students will develop and demonstrate professionalism through observations of professionals in the field, by attending professional events, and by applying confidentiality principles while collecting data and interacting with individuals and groups.
Health Promotion Mission Statement
The mission of the faculty of the Health Promotion Concentration is twofold. First, our mission is to prepare professionally exceptional health promotion students that can serve in a variety of health settings of practice including sh cools, work-sites, communities, with individuals, and in the health care system. The second is to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent diseases within a given population utilizing a holistic approach to the dimensions of health. This degree path is designed to prepare students for careers in the settings of health promotion, and/or to enter a graduate program related to the dimensions of health.
Health Promotion Program Learning Outcomes:
- Students will evaluate and research the dimensions of health from a holistic approach.
- Student will examine through assessments the capacity of and need for a holistic approach to the dimensions of health.
- Students will design, implement, and manage programs related to a holistic approach to the dimensions of health.
- Students will determine appropriate resources related to a holistic approach to the dimensions of health.
- Students will support lifelong growth of self and others utilizing communication and advocacy as it relates to a holistic approach to the dimensions of health.
Single Subject Matter Preparation Program Mission Statement
The mission of the faculty of the Single Subject Matter Preparation Program is to prepare professionally exceptional physical education teachers and coaches that foster the acquisition of content knowledge and skills, and promote physically active lifestyles of children and young adults through high quality physical education programs. This degree path allows individuals to enter into a credential program.
Single Subject Matter Preparation Program Learning Outcomes:
- Students will demonstrate and apply physical education content knowledge through taking exams, completing assignments and participating in course activities.
- Students will demonstrate and apply motor skill competency in a variety of sports and games through successful participation and completion of the theory and analysis courses.
- Students will demonstrate effective communication skills and a high degree of professionalism in their coursework and at professional events.
