AA/19/AS/19/UEPC - Grading Options for Golden Four Courses

Effective May 24, 2019

Courses in GE Subareas A1, (oral communication in the English language), A2 (written communication in the English language), A3 (critical thinking) and B4 (mathematics/quantitative reasoning) are sometimes referred to as the “Golden Four” or “Basic Skills” courses. Some of these one-semester courses have been stretched into two semesters and thus, both semester courses are considered “Golden Four” courses. Each of the four courses must be passed with a minimum grade of C-, per Title 5 Section 40803.

Courses in GE Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 may be offered with one of three grading options: (a) A, B, C, D, and F; (b) A, B, C, NC; or (c) CR/NC. It is noted that the Chancellor’s Office recommends that students take these courses for a letter grade as some majors may require letter grades in all required courses. To the extent permitted by Section 40104.1 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations, each campus may use plus and minus designations in combination with traditional letter grades of A, B, C, and D.

Selection of the grading option is identified in the course proposal form and may be updated via a course modification. In accord with 2/AS/13/UEPC - Syllabus Requirements, the course grading policy must be indicated in the course syllabus made available at or near the start date of the course.
