SOCL 3810 - Body Image and Society

Course examines the culture of beauty, body image, and various ways in which the human body is objectified/commodified. Issues addressed may include, but are not limited to, the following: race/ethnic, gender, and social class dynamics regarding body image; the social construction of beauty and resultant inequalities; plastic surgery; body disfigurement, both voluntary (tattooing, piercing) and involuntary; the Americanization of body image and beauty standards worldwide.
