MUS 2170 - MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)
(2Units) Introduces students to the principles and techniques of MIDI
(Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and its uses in music
composition, recording, and arrangement. Emphasis will be placed on
post production practices in scoring (notation) and the preparation
of MIDI material for presentation on the World Wide Web.
(3Units) Continuation of MUS 1230. Emphasis will be on an understanding of
19th century harmonic practice, including altered and extended
chords, work in advanced modulation procedures, and more
sophisticated harmonic progressions. Writing for the keyboard and
for other instrumental and vocal combinations will be encouraged.
Works from Beethoven through Wagner will be analyzed and extensive
time will be spent creating original works in conscious imitation
of various 19th century styles. May be taken concurrently with MUS 2320.

(2Units) Counterpoint based on the harmonic practice of J. S. Bach. Harmonic
and formal analysis of Bach’s inventions and selected fugues from
the Well-Tempered Clavichord; emphasis on creative writing in
contrapuntal two- and three-part forms. Upon enrolling for
Eighteenth Century Counterpoint, transfer students who have
completed the equivalent of MUS 2220 and 2230 at another
institution must exhibit competency through written and aural
examination in materials normally covered in the theory sequence
offered at this University. Thus, enrollment may be initiated but
not confirmed until successful passage of the required examination.
(2Units) Analysis of various types of musical structure including both small
and large forms; emphasis on analytic techniques and the comparison
of diverse styles. Written assignments will develop the ability to

(2Units) Collaborative Piano / Accompanying II serves as continuation of Collaborative Piano / Accompanying I, with the objective of further developing the student’s ability, skill, technique, and experience in collaborative playing and piano accompanying as well as expanding his/her knowledge base in mixed-media vocal and instrumental repertoire. Students are assigned vocal/piano and instrumental/piano repertoire for study, practice, and performance with other students and/or in other classes. Techniques of shared musical leadership, collaborative musicianship, musical study and interpretation, ensemble balance, rehearsing, and performance are addressed through masterclass-style coaching of prepared repertoire. On a musical level, emphasis is placed on understanding the art of collaboration from multiple perspectives: study of musical scores, musical concepts, concepts of musical partnership, and pianistic technique are addressed with regard for textual and textural concerns in musical interpretation, instrumental and vocal needs, and musical partnership in performance interpretation. Concurrent training and additional instruction will be given to develop sightreading skills and accompanying capacity, with assignments drawn from closed and open ensemble scores, piano reductions of orchestral scores, and piano scores with components useful for honing accompanimental skill. (2Units) A survey of early keyboard music and piano literature from the late 16th century to the early 19th century, with an emphasis on major works of primary composers from the Baroque, Classical, pre-Romantic, and early Romantic eras. Examination of major composers and their significant musical contributions; important and representative pieces of keyboard literature with formal, interpretive, and performance analysis; the development of important genres, forms, and styles of music; developments in keyboard technology and systems of tuning and temperament; compositional and performance practice as relates to the period instrumentation and musical aesthetics; the rise of national and individual styles; and philosophies of major musical and theoretical developments.
(2Units) Study of selected major piano works of representative master composers from the Romantic Era through the Contemporary Era. Course surveys the literature for keyboard instruments from the mid-19th to 21st centuries, with emphasis on major and secondary keyboard works from the Romantic Era to the 20th century. Topics of study will include he examination of significant important musical genres, forms, and works in the keyboard repertoire; study of select and representative interpretive performance as relates to developments in period instrumentation; and philosophies of major musical and theoretical developments. On a macro-level , this survey considers musical, aesthetic, intellectual, emotional, social, political, technological, and economic trends represented through the impact of keyboard music development in European art music and its ensuing developments in the Americas and in Asia through the contemporary age.
