The Pre-Clinical Laboratory Science (Pre-CLS) Certificate provides the required prerequisite coursework for students for eligibility for the California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Trainee license and for admission to Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) post-baccalaureate programs.

The program is designed for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students preparing for entry into CLS training programs and related health professions.

Program Learning Outcomes


Students who complete the Pre-Clinical Laboratory Science Certificate will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in core concepts of biology, chemistry, and related laboratory sciences required for admission to Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) training programs.

  2. Apply fundamental laboratory techniques, safety practices, and analytical skills necessary for clinical and diagnostic laboratory work.

  3. Integrate prerequisite coursework to meet eligibility requirements for the California CLS Trainee license and for admission to Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) post-baccalaureate certificate programs.

  4. Articulate the role of the clinical laboratory in healthcare, demonstrating readiness to pursue advanced training in laboratory medicine or related health professions.

Regarding this Certificate in Pre-Clinical Lab Science, please note that Federal and State regulations require that federal and state aid funds are used to pay for courses that apply to a student’s program of study. Courses that are part of the Biological Sciences B.S./B.A. degree program are considered eligible courses for financial aid purposes.
