The Ethnic Studies Professional Certificate provides a critical course of study that integrates theory with practice. Designed for professionals-including K-12 and university educators, administrators, and community leaders-this program equips participants with the knowledge and skills to serve diverse students and populations in equitable and sustainable ways. Graduates will develop expertise in community engagement, social justice frameworks, and the analysis of systemic inequities, empowering them to contribute to organizations and initiatives that support undeserved communities. Additionally, graduates will be prepared for roles in Ethnic Studies and related fields.
The learning outcomes for the certificate are to:
- Examine the field of Ethnic Studies, including its foundational principles, key concepts, theories, pedagogies, and methods
- Understand the histories, experiences, and cultural expressions of marginalized racial and ethnic groups in the United States from regional, national, and/or global perspectives.
- Engage and participate with communities in activities highlight the knowledge, culture, and/or contributions of marginalized populations.
- Create original projects that advance social awareness of equity through intellectual, creative and/or collaborative approaches.
- Develop critical self-awareness of one’s positionality within systems and structures of power, privilege, and oppression.

Regarding this Certificate in Ethnic Studies, please note that Federal and State regulations require that federal and state aid funds are used to pay for courses that apply to a student’s program of study. Courses that are part of the Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies degree are considered eligible courses for financial aid purposes. Courses in the certificate are not considered eligible for financial aid purposes, as taking courses that are not required to complete your degree may result in receiving less or no federal aid.
