Disclaimer

There are no “catalog rights” in credential programs. Requirements, subject to change, are set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the California State University, and Stanislaus State. Students must meet the current state requirements for the credential. For current state requirements, consult the  Multiple Subject Credential Program section in the Department of Teacher Education Handbook,  available online at www.csustan.edu/Teacher-Education.

Beginning in January 2004, Stanislaus State began offering a Senate Bill 2042 Credential, which authorizes the holder to teach:

  • All subjects in self-contained classes from kindergarten through high school
  • “Core” classes in middle/junior high school and high school
  • Teaching English learners - provide instruction for English language development including specially designed academic instruction in English within integrated class settings of the subject area and grade level authorization of the multiple subject teaching credential. To teach departmentalized ELD, candidates will need to complete the requirements for a bilingual authorization (BILA) or pass the California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL) exam. More information about the authorizations and requirements for teaching English Learners related to your credential can be found on the CTC Serving English Learners webpage

Admission into programs leading to licensure and credentialing does not guarantee that students will obtain a license or credential. Licensure and credentialing requirements are set by agencies that are not controlled by or affiliated with the CSU and requirements can change at any time. For example, licensure or credentialing requirements can include evidence of the right to work in the United States (e.g., social security number or taxpayer identification number) and successfully passing a criminal background check. Students are responsible for determining whether they can meet licensure or credentialing requirements. You need a Social Security Number to get a job, report your wages and receive Social Security benefits. The CSU will not refund tuition, fees, or any associated costs, to students who determine subsequent to admission that they cannot meet licensure or credentialing requirements. Information concerning licensure and credentialing requirements are available from Credential Services.

Program Overview

Elementary teachers have a unique calling. They need to do more than educate students - they must motivate and captivate. Now, if that sounds like a task suited to you, maybe you have what is needed to teach in elementary school.

In practice, most holders of the Multiple Subject Credential teach in grades TK-6, with a substantial number teaching “core” classes in grades 7-8. Only a few teach in high schools.

The Multiple Subject Credential Program is a gateway for many elementary teachers. It is a 36-unit program that includes clinical practice. The program can be completed in a year (including summer/winter sessions). There are several institutions where aspiring teachers can attain their credential. However, Stanislaus State stands out because of its intended mix of Multiple Subject Credential Program’s affordability, timeliness, convenience, and depth of preparation.

Program Requirements

Please note that there are five sets of requirements: general requirements, competency requirements, prerequisite requirements, corequisite course requirements, and program course requirements. The general requirements, competency requirements, prerequisite, and corequisite course requirements may be transferred from other colleges/universities. The program course requirements are the same for the Bilingual Authorization, with the exception of the Multilingual Methods course.
