Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Stand-Alone Certificate

View information for the Department of English , including Learning Objectives for the department and its programs.

In addition to the TESOL concentration and certificate in the English B.A. and the TESOL concentration in Liberal Studies, the Department of English offers the TESOL certificate as a stand-alone certificate. The stand-alone certificate is intended for two cohorts of students who are seeking preparation in teaching English to speakers of other languages: 1) those who have completed their baccalaureate degree in any field and wish to complete the certificate through Extended Education, and 2) undergraduate students outside the Liberal Studies-TESOL Concentration and English with TESOL Concentration and Certificate programs who would like to complement their degree with a TESOL preparation. This certificate is appropriate for those who wish to teach English in language programs in postsecondary language institutes in the US and overseas educational contexts. The TESOL certificate program consists of six TESOL-related courses (19 units). Fluency in both written and spoken English is required of non-native English speakers. The certificate is not a California state teaching credential. (Individuals seeking credentials to teach in California public schools should inquire at the Department of Teacher Education.)

Requirements
