The Master of Business Administration program provides study in advanced concepts of business, industry, and government operations. This program is designed for the active manager or technical supervisor as well as the recent graduate who is interested in advanced study in the field of business. The program includes accounting, finance, operations management, marketing, economics, management, and computer information systems.

Program Learning Goals and Outcomes

  1. Students will have the advanced knowledge of the business disciplines and apply the knowledge in new and unfamiliar circumstances.  Objective:  Students will demonstrate advanced understanding of each business discipline (Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, Management, Marketing, and Operations Management). 
  2. Students will demonstrate advanced communication skills.  Objective 2a:  Students will effectively present business analyses and recommendations through written forms of communication. Objective 2b: Students will effectively present business analyses and recommendations through oral forms of communication.
  3. Students will be able to identify and critically analyze complex managerial challenges and opportunities and innovatively solve business problems.  Objective:  Students will analyze complex business situations and develop and implement innovative solutions to the business problems.
  4. Students will be able to work collaboratively with others in group projects, in an organizational setting.  Objective:  Students will effectively participate and contribute in a team-based environment.
  5. Students will be aware of various moral philosophies toward ethical business issues. Objective:  Students will recognize and analyze ethical problems in business settings and choose and defend their solutions.
  6. Students will be able to identify and articulate the risks and opportunities for all stakeholders in a global market. Objective: Students will effectively analyze management issues from a global perspective.

Admission to the Program

Qualified applicants holding a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university may be admitted to the program. Each applicant must submit the following to the Graduate School:

  1. A fully completed California State University Graduate Application for Admission form, submitted online at www.CalState.edu/Apply by the published deadline date. A minimum overall GPA of 2.8 is required, or a 2.8 GPA in the last 60 semester units attempted or last 90 quarter units attempted. Applicants are to include the following documentation and information within their Cal State Apply application:
  • Recommendations: applicants must submit the names and email addresses for two professional sources who can complete a Recommender Form on behalf of the applicant. The Cal State Apply Recommender Forms must be submitted by the application deadline. A minimum of two letters of recommendation or evaluation forms from faculty and/or other professional sources.
  • Statement of Purpose:  all applicants are required to submit a clear, well-written Statement of Purpose that highlights key academic and professional accomplishments, as well articulates future career goals.
  • Resume: candidates must demonstrate a two-year record of relevant, full-time employment in a professional or supervisory role, or equivalent. Applicants wishing to enter the program without the required two year-experience may request a waiver of the work experience requirement based on exceptional academic performance.
  • Unofficial Transcripts: applicants are to upload unofficial transcripts from each university or college where they completed coursework to their application.
  1. One copy of official transcripts is required from each the university or college from which you earned your bachelor’s degree. Stanislaus State graduates do not need to submit official transcripts. If an applicant completed additional coursework after graduation, an official transcript will be required for that coursework. attended other than Stanislaus State, official transcripts are to be submitted to the Graduate School in MSR 120 by the application deadline.

  2. Applicants with coursework from countries other than the United States are required to provide a comprehensive credential evaluation from an approved organization that will detail their degree and coursework’s equivalency to U.S. standards. Applicants whose undergraduate degree was instructed in other than English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve minimum scores as required by the Office of International Education. Requirements


(30 units minimum)

The Master of Business Administration is awarded upon satisfactory completion of 30 units of MBA core courses and the completion of a Culminating Experience by either completion of an individual graduate project or the passing of a comprehensive examination.

Students must have completed the 18 units of foundation courses listed below or their equivalents. To be exempted from any or all foundation courses, equivalent undergraduate courses must have been completed with a grade of C or better within ten years prior to admission to the program. Exemptions from the foundation courses also can be obtained by passing the corresponding qualifying examination.

Foundation Courses


Foundation courses must be completed prior to the start of the student’s second semester in the program.

In addition to courses listed, computer literacy is required, which is equivalent to CIS 2000 - Introduction to Business Computer Systems .

MBA Electives & the Culminating Experience


(9 units)

Students may fulfill elective coursework and complete their culminating experience by either

  • Completing  any three graduate MBA elective to fulfill a general track MBA or completing three electives to earn a concentration, 9 units, and
  • Passing the Comprehensive Examination to fulfill the Culminating Experience, 0 units

        or

  • Completing any two MBA elective course, 6 units, and
  • Completing the Graduate Project BUS 5960 , 3 units. The Graduate Project replaces one elective course. Consent of instructor and approval of department chair and program director are required in the semester prior to enrollment in BUS 5960.

Note:


MBA core and elective units must be earned within seven years immediately preceding the completion of requirements for the degree. A 3.0 grade point average must be maintained in all graduate work.

Enrollment in MBA core and elective classes is limited to students with classified MBA standing at this University. Exceptions to this policy require written approval of the director of the MBA program.

Master of Business Administration students may satisfy the writing proficiency requirement by meeting the required level of proficiency in either of the following courses:

Accounting Concentration


The Accounting concentration is designed for those students who have completed an undergraduate program in accounting and wish to pursue further study of the discipline. The Concentration is of value to those who wish to fulfill the 150-hour requirement for CPA licensure in the State of California, and to those seeking employment or advancement in accounting. The concentration is comprised of three elective courses within the Accounting curriculum.  See the Course Schedule for the Accounting electives currently being offered.

Business Analytics Concentration


The Business Analytics concentration is designed for students that desire the ability to analyze big data to assist organizations with making data driven decisions. This concentration is good for professionals in all areas, including marketing, operations, management, finance, and accounting, etc. The concentration is comprised of three elective courses within the Business Analytics curriculum.  See the Course Schedule for the Business Analytics electives currently being offered.

Finance Concentration


The Finance concentration is designed for those seeking employment or advancement in financial institutions, such as banks, brokerage firms, investment banking, consulting firms, insurance companies, credit unions, real estate firms or other institutions that make financial decisions. The concentration is comprised of three elective courses within the Finance curriculum.  See the Course Schedule for the Finance electives currently being offered.
