Computer Science Concentration - Liberal Studies

This is a concentration within the Bachelor of Arts program in Liberal Studies.  Please view the information for the Department of Liberal Studies  in conjunction with this concentration information.

This program is designed for Liberal Studies students who are interested in teaching computer science content to students in grades 9 and below. The concentration will provide students with coursework that covers the following four areas: computational thinking, computing practice and programming, and communication devices.

Specific concepts learned in the concentration will include: system design, data representation, computer programing, and the major components and functions of digital devices and the computing systems they compose.  There will also be a specific focus that includes the social, ethical, and legal issues and impacts of computing, as well as the contributions of computer science to current and future innovations in the arts, business, humanities, medicine, and science. 

If students complete the concentration as part of the LIBS undergraduate BA program along with a multiple subject teaching credential, they will also qualify for the supplemental authorization in computer science, sponsored by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. 

Requirements - 15 Units


1. Complete 9 units from the following courses


2. Complete 6 units from the following courses


Notes:


* Math 1030 and Math 1040 must be taken before CS 1500 and CS 3000/4000

* CS 1500 and CS 3000/4000 must be taken before CS 3550 and CS 3200.
