The Department of Economics offers the degree, Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Economics is the study of how society efficiently allocates limited resources. It is a practical field of study which enables students to become critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. The program offers traditional principle courses as well as a wide variety of upper division electives, including quantitative data analysis.  The principle courses, which are also required for business majors, introduce students to the methodology in the field. In addition, the program offers areas of specialization such as Banking, Investment, and Managerial Economics, International Trade and Alternative Economic Systems, Economics and the Public Sector, Labor Economics, and Economic History. The Bachelor of Arts in Economics prepares students for a wide range of career paths in business, finance, banking, government, and law, as well as graduate study in a wide range of disciplines.

 

Program Learning Outcomes

Economics students will:

  1. Explain and apply economic terms, concepts and theories
  2. Collect, process, and interpret data, including statistical inference
  3. Demonstrate quantitative reasoning skills
  4. Explain a variety of specific topics in economics
  5. Apply specialized tools and concepts to contemporary issues
  6. Demonstrate an awareness of global economic forces
  7. Evaluate the impact of various international policies and practices
  8. Compare and contrast alternative explanations of economic events
  9. Explain how economic events and decisions are impacted by values and perceptions
  10. Effectively communicate the results of analysis in a variety of written formats
  11. Demonstrate the ability to communicate economic concepts orally

Requirements

1. Complete the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements.

A student must comply with all University regulations and satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Units and Residency  (minimum of 120 units: 40 units of upper division coursework and 30 semester units at Stanislaus State. At least 24 of these 30 units must be earned in upper-division courses, at least 12 must be in the major, and at least 9 must be applicable to General Education-Breadth requirements)
  2. Grade Point Average  (minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better)
  3. General Education  (minimum of 49 units)
  4. Upper Division Writing Proficiency  (minimum of 3 units)
    - Writing Proficiency (WP) Course (may double count in the major)
  5. United States Constitution and California State and Local Government  (minimum of 3 units)
  6. Multicultural Requirement  (minimum of 3 units) (may double count with General Education requirements or in the major)

Subsequently all students must submit an application for graduation and receive approval from the major advisor, department chair, and Director of Academic Advising. For more information see the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements .

2. Complete the following prerequisites to the major.

3. Complete the major.

No less than 32 upper-division units; of these no more than 8 units of CR-graded course work may apply toward the major. Completion of a minor is not required.

The Major

1. Complete the following upper-division courses.

(17 units)

2. Select at least 15 units or minimum of five additional courses chosen from two or more of the following areas of specialization.

Area specialization exceptions can be made on approval of the department chair.

b. International Trade and Alternative Economic Systems

c. Economics and the Public Sector

d. Labor Economics

e. Economic History
