The Single Subject Matter Preparation Program in Music is a sequence of courses designed to prepare music students to become successful music teachers in K-12 school settings. Students receive education in a variety of musical disciplines and pedagogical approaches, including choral, instrumental, general, and world music. The program is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. All music students may enroll in Subject Matter Preparation Program courses, though students must complete the full curriculum, listed below to obtain documentation of successful completion of the subject matter preparation program. Please note: this is an optional waiver program, not a degree program, concentration, track, or emphasis.

Requirements

Students must complete the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements and Music BM degree requirements, in addition to the following:

1. Prerequisite Courses

MUS 1220 Theory I 3 units
MUS 1230 Theory II 3 units
MUS 1320 Eartraining and Sightsinging I 1 unit
MUS 1330 Eartraining and Sightsinging II 1 unit

Complete 2 consecutive semesters of MUS 1610 (Keyboard), 1640 (Voice), or 1670 (Instr) 2 units.
MUS 2000 Music of World Cultures 3 units
MUS 2150 Introduction to Music Technology 1 unit
MUS 2220 Chromatic Harmony 3 units
MUS 2230 20th Century Techniques 3 units
MUS 2320 Eartraining and Sightsinging III 1 unit
MUS 2900 Music History and Literature I 3 units
Complete a total of 4 semesters from MUS 2400 Orchestra, 2410 Chorale, 2430 Chamber Singers, 2440 Wind Ensemble, or 2480 Jazz Ensemble 4 units total.
All music majors must earn 8 semesters credit in MUS 2880/4880 Directed Listening to graduate (enrollment is also required during any additional semesters with applied study) 8 units total.
