Program Learning Outcomes and Goals


Program Goals

  1. To assist students in perfecting their foreign language skills (all courses are taught in the target language);
  2. To deepen their knowledge of language and the humanities by introducing them to representative authors and ideas; and,
  3. To acquaint them with the culture and traditions of the people whose languages they have chosen to study.

Program Learning Outcomes

In substance, the Department of Modern Languages provides its students the opportunity to achieve, at the very least, the following:

  1. Proficiency in listening and reading (receptive skills) at an “Advanced” level (3) commensurate with the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) Proficiency Guidelines;
  2. Proficiency in speaking and writing (productive skills) at an “Intermediate” level (2+) commensurate with the FSI Proficiency Guidelines;
  3. An understanding of the linguistic components of the target language (i.e., language analysis.);
  4. Fundamental knowledge pertaining to the cultural institutions, patterns of behavior, history and geography of the target culture(s) and how these affect values and traditions;
  5. The ability to adapt both linguistically and culturally to different settings associated with the target language;
  6. Demonstrate respect, understanding and sensitivity for the cultural traits, values, perspectives and contributions of the language’s native speakers;
  7. The ability to understand and critically interpret a variety of works of literature in their specific cultural and historic context; and,
  8. A general knowledge of the nature of language in general, its acquisition, and its use in human interaction.

 

Requirements


1. Complete the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements.


A student must comply with all University regulations and satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Units and Residency  (minimum of 120 units: 40 units of upper division coursework and 30 semester units at Stanislaus State. At least 24 of these 30 units must be earned in upper-division courses, at least 12 must be in the major, and at least 9 must be applicable to General Education-Breadth requirements)
  2. Grade Point Average  (minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better)
  3. General Education  (minimum of 49 units)
  4. Upper Division Writing Proficiency  (minimum of 3 units)
    - Writing Proficiency (WP) Course (may double count in the major)
  5. United States Constitution and California State and Local Government  (minimum of 3 units)
  6. Multicultural Requirement  (minimum of 3 units) (may double count with General Education requirements or in the major)

Subsequently all students must submit an application for graduation and receive approval from the major advisor, department chair, and Director of Academic Advising. For more information see the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements .

2. Complete the following prerequisites to the major:


(12-14 units)

a. The following two courses (or their equivalent):

OR
(6 units)

  • AP exemption (Spanish Literature)

b. One of the following two-course sequences (or their equivalent):


(8 units)

OR

(6 units)

OR

(6 units)

  • AP exemption (Spanish Language)

3. Complete the major of not less than 24 upper-division units.


No more than 8 units of CR-graded course work in courses graded exclusively CR/NC may apply toward the major.

Note:


A student who can demonstrate equivalent preparation may be exempt from 4 to 14 units of the lower-division requirement. Two years of college-level Spanish or the equivalent is required for admission to upper-division courses.

Completion of an academic minor in a related discipline is not required, but is strongly recommended for single subject credential candidates.
