Program Learning Outcomes
- Provide all Stanislaus students the opportunity to achieve appropriate levels of proficiency in written communication.
- Share with our students a rich variety of American, British, and World texts.
- Guide our students to develop a broad range of interpretive abilities and analytical skills.
- Present the historical, cultural, and technical information necessary for students to become competent readers and scholars.

- Engage prospective teachers in the philosophy and practice of teaching language arts in secondary schools.
1. Complete the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements.
A student must comply with all University regulations and satisfy the following requirements:
- Units and Residency (minimum of 120 units: 40 units of upper division coursework and 30 semester units at Stanislaus State. At least 24 of these 30 units must be earned in upper-division courses, at least 12 must be in the major, and at least 9 must be applicable to General Education-Breadth requirements)
- Grade Point Average (minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better)
- General Education (minimum of 49 units)
- Upper Division Writing Proficiency (minimum of 3 units)
- Writing Proficiency (WP) Course (may double count in the major)
- United States Constitution and California State and Local Government (minimum of 3 units)
- Multicultural Requirement (minimum of 3 units) (may double count with General Education requirements or in the major)
Subsequently all students must submit an application for graduation and receive approval from the major advisor, department chair, and Director of Academic Advising. For more information see the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements .
2. Complete the prerequisites to the major, consisting of TWO survey courses from the list below, observing the following restrictions:
a. One course must come from the British:
b. One course must come from the American:
c. One course must be pre-1850:
3. Complete the major of no fewer than 33 upper-division units.
4. Consult with your faculty advisor concerning requirements, changes in curriculum, subject matter preparation programs, etc.

5. Select 13 units of upper-division English electives.
Possibilities include, but are not limited to, literature, creative writing, film, linguistics.
Prospective postgraduate students in English should consult their English faculty advisor concerning which courses in English will best prepare them for graduate study.
Single Subject Matter Preparation (SSMP) in English
Students planning to teach Jr. High School or High School English may fulfill the Subject Matter prerequisites to enter a teaching credential program.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Concentration
Students wishing to have a specific concentration in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) may do so by completing all requirements for the major to include the following specific courses:
Students planning to go on to a MA-TESOL concentration should consider taking at least two semesters of a foreign language.
