Journalism Minor

Journalism is a degree minor in the Department of Communication Studies  that is open to students in any major. It is designed to provide an academic background in aspects of mass communication applicable to work in the public media including newspapers, broadcasting, public relations, and public information functions of businesses and public service organizations. Opportunities for practical media experience and internship training are a feature of the curriculum in the minor.

Requirements


To qualify for this academic minor, students must complete the required number of units with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (C).

2. Complete the following required course:


(3 units)

3. Complete one course from each of the following sections:


(6 units)

4. Select six units of elective courses.


Selection of the upper-division elective courses must be approved by the minor advisor;

Notes:


  • 9 upper division units must stand alone for the minor;
  • No more than 6 units of Laboratory and/or Internships may be applied to the minor;
  • Upper-Division General Education courses may be applied to the minor; and
  • Up to 6 units of the 18-unit total may be taken CR/NC.
