The Health Science major provides students with a broad-based curriculum to pursue a career in health education and advocacy or health leadership and administration. The health industry is the target industry in the United States and employs more than 13.5 million workers in a wide variety of areas. The Health Science degree will prepare students with a comprehensive understanding of community health, health program planning, health science research, health care systems, and health issues in a multicultural society. Students will participate in a concentration to develop in-depth knowledge and gain experience in the area of health leadership and administration

Students in the program will be prepared to provide advocacy, leadership and management in health care settings. This program is designed to articulate with community college programs in allied health to provide students the opportunity to complete a baccalaureate degree related to their select field. The Health Science degree provides appropriate undergraduate education to pursue graduate work in public health, social work, and health services administration.

The Health Science major with a concentration in Health Leadership and Administration will provide students with an interdisciplinary education that will support them in a wide range of middle management careers within the health field. The major emphasis in the concentration is an exploration of community and public health issues, health science research methods, health program planning, communication, and leadership and administration skills. The concentration prepares the student to enter the private/community/public health workforce.

Practicum Equivalency

Up to six upper division units of credit towards the Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science may be granted based on verification of clinical work experience in a field associated with Health Science. One unit of credit can be received for 60 hours of clinical work performed post program completion over a 6 month time period. Students must successfully complete three Health Science core courses with a grade C or better before seeking approval of these units. Students seeking the 6 unit maximum will need to verify 360 clinical hours over a two year period. To request unit credit, the student will need to present a portfolio verifying specialty program completion, certification if appropriate, and related work experience in a Health Science associated field (e.g. radiography, sonography, and emergency medical technician).
