Requirements


1. Complete University General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

2. Complete the following prerequisites to the major:

c. For those choosing the Public Relations or Media and Public Cultures concentrations, the following course is required:


 

3. The following are department recommendations for completing lower-division G.E. requirements:


4. Complete the major of not less than 34 upper-division units, as approved by the major adviser.


Majors must take all courses counted toward the major for a letter grade if the letter grade option is available.

5. Students must achieve a C- grade or better in all prerequisites to the major.


6. Students must achieve a C- grade or better in all courses that count toward fulfilling the requirements for the major.


7. Students must achieve an overall average of 2.0 GPA or better in the major.


8. Completion of a minor is not required.


 

The Major

*No substitutions will be accepted for the coreor required concentration courses. In the electives areas, faculty advisers may make up to two substitutions from another concentration(s).

The Concentrations


 

1. Interpersonal Communication Concentration


(21 units minimum)

This concentration provides an opportunity for students to study the various communication contexts experienced in social, personal, and professional relationships.

2. Media and Public Cultures Concentration


(21 units minimum)

This concentration will examine how communication technologies, media organizations, and social institutions shape the ways in which our lives and the world are made meaningful.  For those choosing the Media and Public Cultures concentration, JOUR 2150 - Writing for the Media  is required.

3. Organizational Communication Concentration


(21 units)

This concentration will prepare students to think critically and creatively about the complex communicative behaviors that occur in a variety of organizational settings.  Students will have a variety of courses to choose from which prepare them for careers in management, personnel, human relations, events planning, customer service, training & development, consulting, and various leadership positions.

4. Public Relations Concentration


(21 units minimum)

This concentration will provide preparation in both theory and practice of communication for prospective professional public relations careers in business, industry, agency, government, and nonprofit sectors of society.  For those choosing the Public Relations concentration, JOUR 2150 - Writing for the Media  is required.
