Department of Kinesiology and Public Health Promotion Mission Statement

The mission of the faculty of the Department of Kinesiology and Public Health Promotion is to professionally prepare students to contribute positively to the health and well-being of members of society as advocates for a physically active lifestyle, and preventative health methods.  We strive to promote life-long learning and service to diverse populations.  Additionally, the department enriches the overall education of all students at Stanislaus State through its activity courses and upper- and lower-division general education course offerings.

This mission is accomplished through a series of foundational courses, assignments and experiences specific to one of three fields of study:

• Exercise Science
• Public Health
• Physical Education

Program Goals

1. Content Knowledge:  Students will demonstrate and apply knowledge and disciplinary concepts related to the field of Kinesiology.
2. Communication Skills:  Students will develop oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
3. Critical Thinking:  Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills including the ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information to make sound decisions and solve problems as they apply to the field of Kinesiology.
4. Professionalism:  Students will demonstrate professional and ethical practices in the areas of communication, conduct, presentation, and preparation.

Requirements

1. Advising is mandatory for all majors within the Department of Kinesiology and Public Health Promotion. Students should seek advising early to help meet their career objective. Advising information is available on the Kinesiology Department website by visiting csustan.edu/kinesphp/advising. Additional information may be provided by contacting the department office either by telephone (209-667-3325) or email (Kinesiology@csustan.edu) for information on academic advising.
2. All enrollment requirements to any Department of Kinesiology and Public Health Promotion Degree must be completed prior to enrolling in any upper-division core KINS courses.  Students who have not completed all enrollment requirements will be blocked from enrolling in upper-division core KINS courses within the major. This registration block will remain in effect for all subsequent semesters until all of the enrollment requirements to the major are completed.
3. Each course counted toward the major, including enrollment requirements, must be completed with a grade of C- (1.7) or higher.  All courses counted toward the major, including enrollment requirements, must be taken on a letter grade basis.
4. Students planning to pursue a graduate or professional school (e.g., PT/OT School) should inquire about those programs’ prerequisite and admission requirements. Most professional post-graduate degree programs have a prerequisite “repeat” policy that only allows a course to be taken twice for a passing grade; a course is considered a repeat even if it is taken at a different university.
5. Students interested in obtaining a single subject secondary teaching credential are strongly advised to confer with the Department of Teacher Education program adviser at the beginning of their junior year. An application for admission into the teacher education credential program is available from the Department of Teacher Education.
6. Many Kinesiology courses are physically demanding and require physical competency to pass the course successfully. It is recommended for students to take these courses in a semester in which they are able to physically perform the course skills. For students with injuries, physician’s clearance may be required to return to physical activity. Students missing over 3 weeks of an Activity Course, 1000 level or Theory and Analysis course will have missed too much of the course content and physical practice to make up and pass the course successfully.

Teaching Credentials

Majors in Kinesiology interested in the single subject secondary credential are referred to the Teacher Education  section of this catalog for a description of teaching credential programs.

Before admission to the Single Subject Credential Program, students must be cleared for subject matter competence. The Department of Kinesiology will certify students for competence in appropriate subject matter content when they:

1. Complete the approved California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Single Subject Matter Preparation Program in Physical Education at CSU. Stanislaus, or,
2. Earn a passing score on the Single Subject Examination in Physical Education, Test #09 and the CSET Examination in Physical Education.
