AGST 5510 - History and Philosophy of Agricultural Education

This course will cover the historical and philosophical foundations of agricultural education in the United States. Every discipline is built upon a foundational body of knowledge. Professionals in the field should be aware of these foundations, as this understanding deepens their comprehension of current practices, fosters greater appreciation for the discipline, and can guide their professional decisions. Being knowledgeable about the philosophical and historical roots of one’s field is a hallmark of a well-educated individual.

Prerequisites: Admission into the Agricultural Education Credential Program

Course Learning Outcomes List
1. Disciplinary Literacy 

Analyze and communicate the philosophical, historical, and social foundations of agricultural education and their relevance to career and technical education. 
 

Organize and present key agricultural concepts using instructional approaches that enhance student comprehension and engagement across varied learning levels. 
 

Integrate literacy instruction into agricultural education to enhance students’ reading, writing, and technical vocabulary essential for success in agriculture-related careers (PLO #1); 
 

2. Critical Thinking / Problem-Solving Skills 

Design inclusive, differentiated lesson plans that integrate practical agricultural applications and prepare students for real-world problem solving. 
 

Develop and implement diverse assessment strategies to evaluate both theoretical understanding and hands-on agricultural skills. 
 

Adapt instructional methods to accommodate students’ cultural backgrounds, learning needs, and interests, fostering engagement and motivation in agricultural contexts (PLO #2); 
 

3. Effective Communication 

Demonstrate effective classroom management and group facilitation skills to support individual and collective learning outcomes in agricultural education. 

Apply inclusive teaching strategies to engage diverse learners in agricultural education, promoting equitable access and participation for all students (PLO 3); 
 

4. Global Perspective 

Create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment that encourages respect, collaboration, and active participation in agricultural learning experiences across diverse contexts (PLO 4); and

5. Civic Responsibility and Ethical / Professional Behavior 

Demonstrate professional ethics and reflective practice consistent with the standards of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) for agricultural educators (PLO 5).
