ART 2040 - Introduction to Museum Studies3 unit(s) (Same as ANTH 2040) An overview of the history and mechanics of museums surveying the foundation of these institutions, their historical, ethical, and political roles in our society. Course outlines the different departments and professionals involved in the everyday practices of different types of museums.
Satisfies G.E. Area 3A.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will be abe to:
- Identify different types of museums and collections, their roles, and functions in our society (Art History PLO #4);
- Analyze the political, economic, cultural, and social context of museums around the world using case studies presented in class (Art History PLO #4);
- Appraise critically how museums function within American society and academia, facilitated through lectures, readings, discussions, write-ups, and visual analyses (Anthropology PLO #5, Art History PLO #4);
- Recognize the impact of cross-cultural contact, colonialism, and globalization in the history of museums and the foundation of these institutions (Anthropology PLO #3, Anthropology PLO #5, Art History PLO #5); and,
- Write responses and reflections on the legal, ethical, social, and other roles and responsibilities of museums in our society (Anthropology PLO #3, Art History PLO #5).
