KINS 3900 - Disparities in Public Health3 unit(s) (Health Disparities) Course will introduce students to the concepts of health disparity, health equity, and social justice in health. Students will examine how policy, social, economic, environmental, cultural and lifestyle factors contribute to differences in morbidity and mortality as well as prevalent theories used to understand or explain health disparities. Students will explore populations most affected by health inequities as well as research on health disparities and culturally responsive public health programs to promote health equity. Open to Juniors and Seniors only.
Satisfies G.E. Area UD-4.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will be able to:
- Define health disparities and health inequity (PLO #1, 2, 3);
- Discuss the social determinants perspective on health, including the complex relationship between social, political, and economic factors (PLO #2, 3);
- Describe the historical development of systems of racial classification and their use in scientific inquiry and public policy (PLO #1, 4);
- Examine the determinants of health disparities for particular groups, including social, political, and economic factors (PLO #1, 2, 3); and,
- Appraise the components of interventions and advocacy efforts to determine their systematic effectiveness in addressing health disparities (PLO #1, 5, 8).
