AGST 4100 - Agroecology

Students will analyze the environmental, social, and economic interconnections within various types of agricultural systems. Students will learn the ecological processes regulating soil-water-plant relationships and examine biotic and abiotic interactions in sustainable farming practices. Open to Juniors and Seniors only.

Prerequisites: AGST 2200 or BIOL 1050 and BIOL 1150 or equivalents, and AGST 2014 or equivalents, or consent of the instructor.

Hours: Lecture, 3 hours; Laboratory, 3 hours

Course Learning Outcomes List
Students will be able to:

  1. Describe basic ecological principles in agroecosystems (PLO #1);
  2. Explain biotic and abiotic factors that regulate agroecosystems (PLO #1);
  3. Describe the economic, social, and environmental aspects of key agroecological systems (PLO #1, #4);
  4. Analyze the impacts and interrelationships between agricultural systems and associated ecosystems (PLO #1, #4);
  5. Apply ecological principles to design sustainable food systems (PLO #2); and,
  6. Assess agricultural practices (e.g., conventional, organic, regenerative agriculture) and formulate alternative methods that promote long-term sustainability in agriculture (PLO #2).
