CJ 4201 - Criminal Justice and Social Movements

Course will focus on the use of free speech to protest governmental policies and injustices. Additionally, students will examine how the criminal justice system responds to the growth and influence of social movements.

Prerequisites: CJ 2250, 2255.

Course Learning Outcomes List

Students will be able to:

  1. Critically assess the state of criminal justice policy with regards to social movements, by upholding and protecting the exercise of free speech and non-violent protesting (PLO #1);
  2. Compare and contrast the liberty versus security related issues associated with exercising free speech and organizing public gatherings to protest governmental policies and perceived injustices;
  3. Evaluate how the U.S. Constitution’s Bill of Rights applies to the defense and prosecution of individuals exercising free speech by examining the ideas of Enlightenment Thinkers and constitutional arguments formed by the Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court (PLO #2);
  4. Examine how the Criminal Justice system responds to civil unrest and rioting through the examination of legal precedents, case studies, research, and theory (PLO #4);
  5. Identify how free speech, social movements, and protests have historically shaped legislative actions related to governmental policies and the evolution of civil rights (PLO# 2); and,
  6. Describe leading theories and research on social movements and protests in society through dialectical discourse, Socratic discussion, and critical commentary regarding criminal justice practices, responses, and tactics (PLO #3).
