AGEC 3340 - Agricultural Commodities Futures3 unit(s) Fundamentals of managing agricultural risks through the futures and options markets. The mechanics of trading in the futures market.
Prerequisites: MATH 1600 OR MATH 1602 or equivalent, ECON 2500 and ECON 2510; and a lower division accounting course or consent of instructor. An agricultural economics course may be substituted for ECON 2510.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will be able to:
- Explain why futures exchanges and commodity futures contracts exist;
- Explain hedging and be able to design hedging strategies for various commodity producers and consumers;
- Explain both put and call options and their use in risk management; and,
- Explain the usefulness and shortcomings of both fundamental and technical analysis of futures market.
