ETHS 3600 - Indigenous Perspectives in Theatre3 unit(s) Examine how indigenous playwrights write about the social, political, and economic disparities that contribute to how their community forms an indigenous identity. By writing about and discussing these plays, students will gain a deeper understanding of what it means to think about indigenous concerns and advocate against the stereotypes, misrepresentations, racism, and erasure that often affects native peoples in the Americas. (Offered under the subjects ETHS and THEA)
Satisfies G.E. area UD-3 and the Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will:
• Identify and articulate indigenous stereotypes and misrepresentations;
• Describe and analyze the socio-cultural context of a play written by an indigenous playwright;
• Critically and respectfully discuss and write about indigenous representations found in drama;
• Examine how indigenous playwrights advocate for their unique communities through theater; and
• Apply theater historiography, dramatic criticism, and decolonizing methodologies when talking or writing about plays.
