EDSE 4810 - Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Course examines theoretical foundations and applications of evidence-based best practices for students with ASD including but not limited to structured teaching, visual supports and visual modeling, social narratives, positive behavior support, self-advocacy skills, inclusive education, recreation and leisure, and special interventions for young children including discrete trial training.

Course Learning Outcomes List
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and/or dispositions related to the:

  1. Etiology, prevalence, and diagnosis of ASD (MIS Standard 1, ASDAA Standard 1);
  2. Systems and institutions involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and case management of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASDAA Standard 3);
  3. The unique characteristics of students with ASD and challenges they may pose for learning, language and communication, social skills, behavior, and processing and their implications for program planning and service delivery. (ASDAA Standard 1);
  4. The educational issues related to the provision of PAPE to students with ASD. (ASDAA Standard 1: C);
  5. Legal issues related to ASD. (ASDAA Standard 2, ASDAA Standard 3); and,
  6. Evidence-based and multi-faceted methodologies and strategies utilized to teach and engage students with ASD (ASDAA Standard 2).
