Provides advanced social work students with support, structure, and guidance to complete an original research study, including preparing a thesis manuscript that meets the requirements of the graduate school and defending the thesis in a public forum.

Corequisites: SW 5991

Prerequisites: Completion of SW 5020, SW 5025, SW 5032, and 5990.

Course Learning Outcomes List
Students in this course will: 1. Possess the skills to contribute to the knowledge base of the social work profession by completing an independent capstone endeavor and sharing it through a published document and presentation to the community; 2. Expand her /his research skills that will continue to enhance social work practice; 3. Demonstrate a spirit of inquiry that is characterized by curiosity and a motivation to learn about others whose lives are different from one’s own and are sensitive to cultural and ethical implications of research; 4. Apply knowledge about the integrative practice framework from course work and practicum to a research study; 5. Demonstrate the ability to conceptualize research that is discriminating, ethical, and self-critical and needing continual development; 6. Demonstrate the ability to critique practice and theoretical frameworks to compile a comprehensive literature review and apply this knowledge to implications for soda) work practice; 7. Participate in the development of knowledge that contributes to an advanced understanding of social issues racing the Central Valley region and helps improve social conditions in the region; and 8. Analyze research data and offer recommendations based on findings related to social work practice, policy, and future research.
