AGEC 4640 - Current Issues in World Food Economy

Formerly Economics and Agricultural, Offered under the subject ECON and AGEC Topics covered include factors driving changing global food consumption patterns; causes of food price surges and implications for poverty, hunger, malnutrition, and food security; drivers of food supply; resource use and the environment; and international agricultural trade policy. Open to Juniors and Seniors only.

Prerequisites: ECON 2500 and ECON 2510/AGEC 2510 or consent of instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes List
Students will be able to:

  1.  Describe the agricultural sector and related industries, its importance to the overall economy;
  2.  Explain demand-side variables and how they impact the agriculture sector and related industries;
  3.  Describe the role of prices and the impact of market structures in food production and consumption;
  4.  Explain the consequences of international trade for the agricultural cluster;
  5.  Explain how resource allocation decisions are made in a market economy;
  6.  Describe the problems of natural resource allocation decisions; and,
  7.  Analyze the rationales and impacts of various governmental programs aimed at the agricultural sector and explain the impacts of changes in those policies.
