MUS 3300 - Jazz Theory and Analysis1 unit(s) (Formerly Jazz Arranging) Study of jazz theory as it pertains to standard repertoire and analysis of solo improvisation.
Prerequisites: MUS 2101, MUS 2101, MUS 1220, or MUS 1230, or consent of instructor.
Course Learning Outcomes List The purpose of this course is to:
- Provide a comprehensive understanding of jazz theory and how it pertains to jazz repertoire and improvisation;
- In addition, students will analyze various pieces of jazz repertoire as well as the improvisational elements found in solos of the jazz masters; and
- The skills learned in this course will transfer over to all of the other jazz courses offered, including: MUS 3301 Jazz Arranging, MUS 2100, 2110 Jazz Improvisation I & II, and MUS 2501/4501 Jazz Chamber Ensemble.
