MUS 3260 - Form and Analysis

2 unit(s)
Analysis of various types of musical structure including both small and large forms; emphasis on analytic techniques and the comparison of diverse styles. Written assignments will develop the ability to communicate analysis results in narrative format.

Prerequisites: MUS 2220 and 2230, or successful passage of theory placement examination.

Course Learning Outcomes List
Students will:

  1. Locate, identify, observe, examine, analyze, and interpret musical materials, tools, parameters, and principles of compositional process used as standard procedures of musical development in small to large structures of musical form (PLOs 3, 5);
  2. Deliver clear and logical assessment in explaining formal processes involved in compositional practices of the common practice used in the creation of essential musical forms from small to large structures;
  3. Develop awareness and understanding of aesthetic values pertinent to values of musical expression in relationship to the interpretation of musical ideas and compositional techniques (PLOs 3. 5. 6);
  4. Elaborate in musical analysis, through written prose, and in oral presentation the summary of observations and interpretive values accompanying analysis that gives expression to their understanding through description, presentation, and performance of musical works (PLOs 3, 5, 6);
  5. Develop competency in studying, reading, and listening to diverse pieces of music literature, formulate interpretations of compositional and performance perspective, and increase awareness in aural and written skills to be able to identify, differentiate, compare and contrast musically diverse formal styles and procedures (PLOs 3, 5);
  6. Develop and demonstrate competency and effectiveness in writing about music through the lens of musical analysis and expression, aiming to improve on the engagement of critical thinking in the process of musical analysis and through writing, expression, and communication on analysis (PLOs 3, 5, 6);
  7. Combine and integrate their analytic comprehension and skills with the expression and execution of interpretive values in written, oral, and musical performance practice and presentation (PLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6);
  8. Participate and engage in conversation about musical analysis in collaborative discussions and workshops to hone analytic and prosaic skills (PLOs 3, 5);
  9. Have the opportunity to compose and/or perform small musical forms at the foundational level of investigation to demonstrate understanding, critical thinking, and creative application in musical engagement (PLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6); and, 
  10. Compose written prose to hone and develop English writing skills pertinent to the explanation and expression of musical procedures as analyzed and understood (PLOs 1, 2, 3, 4).
