LIBS 3200 - Foundations of Education in a Diverse Society (WP)4 unit(s) (Formerly LIBS 3000) Addresses the major historical, social, and cultural foundations of education with an emphasis on diversity; the major theories of learning; and how culture, socio-economic status, sexuality, and gender influence achievement. Students will have the opportunity to review the new California Teaching Performance Expectations/Standards and how they function in K-12 spaces. Special emphasis will be on learning about California’s English Learners and students who have special needs. Course requirements include twenty (20) hours of classroom observation. Fingerprint clearance from the Public Safety office on campus and tuberculosis clearance must be completed before the first week of the semester to ensure timely placement for field experience. Placements may be limited or unavailable for students with felony convictions. Open only to Liberal Studies majors.
Satisfies upper-division writing proficiency requirement.
Course Learning Outcomes List This course will:
* Address the major historical, social, and cultural foundations of education with an emphasis on diversity, the major theories of learning, and how culture, socio-economic status, and other aspects of diversity influence achievement. (PLO 2)
* Develop and assess students’ writing abilities within the discipline to fulfill the writing proficiency requirement. (PLO 4)
* Provide an experiential learning opportunity that will foster self exploration and awareness of the diverse environment of California schools. (PLO 3)
In this course, students will:
* be able to explain the relationship between learning theories and research-based practice on instruction, especially as identified by the California Teacher Performance Expectations; (PLO 2)
* research and evaluate the historical, cultural, and social foundation of education to including the great philosophical debates, education law, and the significant theorists; (PLO 5)
* be able to describe the role classroom safety, classroom environment, and student/teacher interaction plays in student achievement and success. (PLO 5)
* examine the role of social justice in education, including student beliefs, teacher expectations, and democracy of education; (PLO 3)
* analyze the impact diversity has on education, including student background and needs, as well as the role of community and educational resources. (PLO 3)
