GEOL 3050 - Environmental Geology

Explores environmental remediation, mineral and energy resources, solid waste disposal, and protection of water resources. Includes two field trips and one Forum Day.

Satisfies G.E. area UD-5.

Prerequisites: None; recommend GEOL 2100.

Hours: (Lecture, 3 hours; activity, 2 hours)

Course Learning Outcomes List
Students will be able to:

  1. Discriminate internal Earth processes (plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanism) from surficial Earth processes (runoff, erosion, mass wasting, and the hydrologic cycle);
  2. Describe the different components of the hydrologic cycle;
  3. Critically evaluate current practices for flood and coastal erosion control;
  4. Critically evaluate current practices for landslide control;
  5. Critically evaluate current practices for mitigating earthquake hazards;
  6. Discuss the philosophy behind the process of Environmental Impact Analysis, in light of environmental protection laws and recent case law;
  7. Compare and contrast different strategies for development of water resources;
  8. Discuss the pros and cons of future development of mineral resources;
  9. Summarize the process of formation of oil and gas reservoirs;
  10. Discuss the pros and cons of future development of oil and gas resources; and,
  11. Discuss the pros and cons of future development of other energy resources.
