GEOG 4800 - Survey of Geographic Thought and Literature (WP)3 unit(s) Survey of the history and philosophy of geography, its place among the sciences and social sciences, and the major contributors to the development of modern scientific geography.
Satisfies upper-division writing proficiency requirement.
Prerequisites: Consent of instructor.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will be able to:
- Understand the significance of Geographic Thought, not just in the past but also in the present, and its role in a holistic and integrative discipline (PLO 6);
- Compare, contrast, and critically evaluate these competing approaches, both in general and in relation to a particular substantive area of research (PLO 3);
- Work with others to facilitate productive discussions of geographic thought, with a focus on discussions across subdisciplines (physical, human, GIS, etc.) (PLO 6);
- Discuss and explain the basic arguments, assumptions, and premises of dominant contemporary approaches to geographic concepts, research, and theory (PLO 6); and,
- Develop and improve writing skills for critical geographic inquiry as an essential task of thought in geography and social sciences in general (PLO 6 - WP).
