GEOG 3020 - Human Ecology

Same as ENVR 3020 Study of environmental problems arising from human use of the earth’s resources. Topics include population dynamics, natural resource management, land use, coastal preservation, energy resources, and humankind’s relationship to nature.

Satisfies G.E. area UD-4.

Course Learning Outcomes List
Students will be able to:

  1. Describe the components of ecosystems, and demonstrate an understanding of how the various components of ecosystems function, interact and change over time, and how human activities affect the stability of ecosystems. (PLO 2 & 3 and GE Goal 2.2)
  2. Explain the major revolutions that have enabled humans to become the dominant force in the world and compare and contrast the environmental impacts of populations of developing (poor) and developed (affluent) countries on resource use. (PLO 3 & GE Goal 1.3 & 2.3)
  3. Differentiate the components of the water cycle, identify and explain the major water resources management challenges on a local, regional, and global scale. (PLO 2 & 3 and GE Goal 2.2 & 3.3)
  4. Recognize the importance of soil as fundamental to the survival of terrestrial ecosystems and human civilization and outline human activities that might degrade soil ecosystem services. (PLO 2 & 3 and GE Goal 3.1 & 3.3)
  5. Explain the importance of biodiversity conservation and examine the role played by humans in biodiversity loss. (PLO 2 & 3 and GE Goal 1.3 & 2.2)
  6. Compare and contrast the impacts of different sources of energy (fossil, renewable, and nuclear energy) on the environment and human society. (PLO 3 and GE Goal 1.3 & 3.3)
  7. Identify the major types and causes of atmospheric and water pollution and their impacts on natural ecosystems and human society. (PLO 2 & 3 andGE Goal 1.3 & 3.3)
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of sustainable development and its application to the management of environmental resources. (PLO 3 and GE Goal 1.3 & 2.3)
