ETHS 4200 - Racial and Ethnic Experiences3 unit(s) Course explores racial and ethnic experiences of underrepresented groups in the US. Through an interdisciplinary and critical approach, the course examines the concepts of race and ethnicity and how they are produced over time. Furthermore, the course examines race and ethnicity as they relate to multiple forms of power including gender, class, sexuality, and nationality. We will also discuss the ways in which race and racism reproduces, which includes examining: racial classification, racial hierarchies and inequities, colonialism, and white supremacy. The course concludes with learning about how underrepresented groups resist and challenge contemporary forms of racism and oppression.
Satisfies G.E. area UD-4 and the Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement.
Prerequisites: Recommend ETHS 2050.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will:
- Define the concepts of race and ethnicity;
- Discuss the ways in which racism continues over time;
- Examine multiple relations of power that inform contemporary racial and ethnic experiences; and,
- Develop awareness of how underrepresented groups resist and challenge racism and oppression.
