ENGL 3550 - Years of War, Days of Peace

A look at films, novels, and poetry of the Cold War, the war in Viet Nam, and Persian Gulf War. One of two paired courses in the G.E. Summit Program (War and Peace).

Satisfies G.E. area UD-3 and Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement.

Prerequisites: Completion of lower-division G.E. area 3B requirements, and consent of Summit Program Coordinator.

Course Learning Outcomes List
The purpose for taking this course is to:

  • Engage critically with representations of the Cold War, the American War in Viet Nam, and the Persian Gulf war in film and literature in order to examine the perspectives of the writers and filmmakers, the historical context of the works, the political orientation of the works, the humanist aspect of anti-war/pacifist “messages” in the texts;
  • Develop students’ ability to read/view critically, to discuss and write about literary/filmic texts; and
  • Carry on discussions, verbally and in writing, of such materials which reflect a grasp of the aesthetic, historical, and social implications of the works.
