EDSE 4160 - Foundations of Special Education1 unit(s) Introductory course in the legal and historical foundations of special education.
Prerequisites: Admission to the Multiple Subject, Single Subject, or Education Specialist Credential Program.
Course Learning Outcomes List It is expected that:
1. Students will identify major disability categories. (Standard 14a);
2. Students will learn the important differences between students with disabilities and students in general education. (Standard 14a);
3. Students will understand important elements of California and federal laws and procedures pertaining to the education of students with disabilities. (Standard 14b);
4. Students will learn about the general education teacher’s role and responsibilities in the Individual Education Program (IEP) process, including identification; referral; assessment; IEP planning and meeting; implementation; and evaluation. (Standard 14b);
5. Students will acquire a basic level of knowledge and skills in the assessment of students with disabilities in order to identify students for referral to special education programs. (Standard 14c);
6. Students will discuss issues of social integration for students with special needs who are included in the general education classroom. (Standard 14:t);
7. Students will be able recognize and minimize bias in the referral and assessment process. (Standard Sc);
8. Students will know when to make accommodations for students with special needs when administering standardized tests. (TPE 3);
9. Students will know their legal and professional obligations to protect the privacy of students. (TPE 12); and
10. Students understand state and federal law regarding the disciplining of students with disabilities. (TPE 12).
