EDMS 4180 - Classroom Management and Professional Practice3 unit(s) Presents methods of classroom management and practical aspects of working in schools. Also addresses the professional duties and obligations of teachers.
Prerequisites: Admission to full-time student teaching.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will:
1. Apply the child’s level of development to the drafting of an appropriate classroom organization and management plan that addresses the needs of all learners. Develop systematic strategies and techniques for organizing and managing classroom activities and students. Research and practitioner-based models for classroom management will be reviewed and explored;
2. Implement a positive classroom management plan that nurtures the social and emotional development of students and is sensitive to culturally different and/or special needs students;
3. Encourage students to set high academic standards and expectations, and understand its relationship to student behavior and achievement;
4. Describe the importance of developing professional attitudes and practices in the role of the teacher. Emphasis will be based upon real-world solutions that enhance teaching effectiveness, administrative duties, professional obligations, fundamental classroom management techniques, and overall classroom effectiveness;
5. Identify the ethical and professional responsibilities of teachers;
6. Candidates reflect on their own practice and how they can contribute to creating a learning community among teachers. They will set professional growth goals to pursue after meeting requirements for the preliminary credential; and,
7. Learn how to effectively communicate with parents using culturally sensitive approaches. The practical aspects of teaching in schools will be addressed, including the importance of collaboration with colleagues and administrators, strengthening the home-school connection, preparing for routine matters of schooling (back-to-school night, open house, parent conferences, parent club meetings, etc.), contributing to a positive school culture.
