COMM 4160 - Intercultural Communication3 unit(s) Examines intercultural communication on the interpersonal level. In particular, it looks at the ways in which cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings. As such, the cultural assumptions brought to the interpersonal communication encounter will be explored. Through such inquiry, insights will be obtained about communicating competently with persons of other cultures.
Satisfies GE area UD-4 and the Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement.
Prerequisites: Junior standing or consent of instructor.
Course Learning Outcomes List By the end of this course in intercultural communication, students will be able to:
1: Articulate the relationships between communication and culture in national and international contexts through study of intercultural communication theories, research and practices;
2: Analyze the influence history, identity, worldview, belief, values, language, nonverbal communication, mass media and technology on various (inter)cultural issues and encounters across contexts. (GE 3.3-supplemental);
3: Identify one’s own self-awareness of cultural identities including ethnicity, gender, race, religion, social class, ability, sexual orientation, nation throughout the lifespan and recognizing how these identities and their assumptions are produced to influence one’s communication patterns in a multicultural and globalized society (GE 3.4-anchor, PLO5.d anchor ); and,
4: Demonstrate the ability to apply principles of intercultural communication sensitivity and competence required to improve human interactions in diverse local, national and international contexts.
