CJ 4350 - Violence Against Children3 unit(s) Study of the philosophical and legalistic definitions of childhood and violence. This includes a discussion of the extent, distribution, predictors, as well as the selective enforcement of such violence.
Prerequisites: CJ 2250 and CJ 2280, or consent of instructor.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will be able to:
• Demonstrate a broad understanding of the evolution of the concepts of youth, violence and the interrelation between the two;
• Articulate the philosophical, sociological, psychological, and legalistic definitions of violence as they relate to a variety of sources, including but not limited to inequality, the environment, community, schools, the family, and particularly the juvenile/criminal justice system; and
• Describe the current realities and extent of violence against children as currently defined in the U.S. Know the various responses to violence by juvenile and criminal justice agencies, including agency induced prevention of violence before it occurs and the role of these agencies as violent actors.
