CJ 4230 - Juvenile Justice

A case study and analysis of the American juvenile justice system from its historical beginnings through its current structure and operations and to an exploration of future trends. Discussion will include constitutional rights of juveniles, the judicial process, system structure and operation, juvenile crime, violence, and gangs. As an activity, students will be required to conduct an on-site field observation of the juvenile justice system and complete a case study research project on an actual juvenile case.

Prerequisites: CJ 2250 and CJ 2280, or consent of instructor.

Hours: (Lecture, 3 hours; activity, 2 hours)

Course Learning Outcomes List
The purpose of this course is to: Provide the student with a thorough understanding of the American juvenile justice system; Learn the history and rationale of the system, how the system operates today, and the problems and future directions of the system; Gain not only a practical education on the mechanics of the system; and Also the ability to critically evaluate it and explore new possibilities.
