BIOL 5961 - Graduate Seminar in Biology1 unit(s) Seminar-format course in which each student presents information and leads discussion on topic selected for the semester. Topics change each semester. Each student is required to take the course three times.
Prerequisites: Graduate standing in the Biological Sciences master’s program or consent of instructor.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will have the knowledge and skill to:
- Search scientific literature and other sources of information on various topics;
- Present topics orally and lead and stimulate discussion on these topics;
- Discuss topics presented by others;
- Gain knowledge and in-depth understanding of various topics in biology;
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge, skills, and values appropriate to their discipline;
- Demonstrate the ability to be creative, analytical, and critical thinkers;
- Demonstrate the ability to work as individual researchers/scholars as well as in collaboration with others in contributing to the scholarship of their disciplines, as appropriate;
- Demonstrate advanced oral and written communication skills, complemented, as appropriate to the discipline; and,
- Demonstrate the ability to access and analyze information from a myriad of primary, print, and technological sources.
Depending on the specific topics offered, students will have the knowledge and skill to:
- Demonstrate relevant knowledge of the global perspectives appropriate to their discipline; and,
- Demonstrate knowledge of new and various methods and technologies as appropriate to their discipline.
