ANTH 3106 - Peoples and Cultures of Asia3 unit(s) (Formerly ANTH 3101) Examines the cultural diversity of Asian countries: China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, India, and Southeast Asia. It is taught from the perspective of cross-cultural interaction between dominant and minority ethnic groups.
Satisfies G.E. area UD-4 and the Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will:
• Acquire a command over the theories that underlie various sociohistorical processes in Asia, including colonialism, resistances, cultural clash and mixture, invasions, displacement, nationalism, and racial and gender identities;
• Develop analytical and critical evaluation skills through the study of major social scientific debates concerning the study of culture;
• Obtain the capacity to differentiate among various cultures, and their relationship to non-western and western cultures economically, politically, and sociohistorically;
• Enhance their ability to write expressively and analytically through the composition of essays and papers on topics relevant to course content; and
• Widening their understanding and appreciation of the diversity of cultures in the region and cultural expression.
