ANTH 3105 - Peoples and Cultures of the Pacific3 unit(s) (Formerly ANTH 3101) (Formerly Cultures of the Pacific) An ethnographic (cultural) survey of the native societies of the Pacific (Oceania) including Australia, Melanesia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Cultural change is emphasized as well as native traditions.
Satisfies G.E. area UD-4 and the Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement.
Prerequisites: ANTH 2060 recommended.
Course Learning Outcomes List Students will:
•Acquire a command over the theories that underlie various sociohistorical processes in the Oceana, including colonialism, resistances, cultural clash and mixture, invasions, displacement, nationalism, and racial and gender identities;
•Develop analytical and critical evaluation skills through the study of major social scientific debates concerning the study of culture;
•Obtain the capacity to differentiate among various cultures, and their relationship to non-western and western cultures economically, politically, and sociohistorically;
•Enhance their ability to write expressively and analytically through the composition of essays and papers on topics relevant to course content; and
•Widen their understanding and appreciation of the diversity of cultures in the region and cultural expression.
