ANTH 3070 - Peoples and Cultures of Africa3 unit(s) An ethnographic survey of selected contemporary and traditional societies and cultures of sub-Saharan Africa. Emphasis is placed on the varied effects of Western European culture on the peoples studied as well as the ongoing process of change in traditional customs and cultures.
Satisfies G.E. area UD-4 and the Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement.
Prerequisites: ANTH 2060 recommended or junior standing.
Course Learning Outcomes List By completing this course, students will develop:
• A command over the theories that underlie various sociohistorical processes in the Africa, including the persistence and dynamics of traditional institutions and customs such as family, community, mortuary/funeral rituals, and property relations, in the context of ongoing processes of nation building and global political and economic change;
• Analytical and critical evaluation skills through the study of major social scientific debates concerning the study of culture;
• An understanding of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of culture and society through the comparison and contrasting of anthropological work with other scholarly sources;
• The capacity to differentiate between various cultures, and their economic, political and sociohistoric relationships;
• Where practicable, enhancing the ability to write expressively and analytically through the composition of essays and papers on topics relevant to course content; and
• The widening of understanding and appreciation of the sociohistoric and cultural expression of non-western cultures.
