ECEC 4103 - Special Education and Assessment3 unit(s) An introductory course aimed at providing future early childhood education teachers with a foundation on special education. The course also provides introductions to perspectives from critical disabilities studies, the nature of disability in society, and asset-based perspectives. This course introduces topics related to current legal requirements, historical viewpoints, perspectives on [dis]ability (including early instances of dyslexia), data collection methods, evaluation tools, interpretation of data, using interpretation for goal setting, progress monitoring, effective collaboration with collegial experts, communication with parents and integration of funds-of-knowledge into instructional practices. The course discusses issues and trends related to service delivery models, assessment/educational planning, team collaboration and school personnel, curriculum and instruction, and local resources.
Prerequisites: Admission to Early Childhood Education Credential (ECEC) program.
