ECEC 4102 - Teaching for Social Justice

Teacher candidates will have the opportunity to explore the major historical, social, and cultural foundations of education with an emphasis on how concepts such as race/ethnicity, age, gender, culture, sexual orientation, religion, ableness, socio-economic status, language, and other aspects of diversity influence achievement and can ultimately impact the growth, development, and learning outcomes for all children. Concepts such as implicit bias, stereotypes, prejudice, power, privilege, and deficit thinking will be introduced for candidates to examine in relation to student/teacher interactions and how those interactions influence outcomes such as student belonging, achievement, and academic success. With respect to lesson planning, students will have the opportunity to produce a culturally responsive/sustaining lesson plan that utilizes research-informed teaching strategies/practices and includes standards/objectives aligned to formative and summative assessments while meeting the needs of emerging bilinguals and differently-abled / neurodiverse students. 

Prerequisites: Admission to Early Childhood Education Credential (ECEC) program.
