ECEC 4105 - Literacy Education for Early Learners5 unit(s) An overview of scientifically informed early literacy acquisition and instruction for grades PK-3. It presents key conceptual and research foundations to understand reading development and effective literacy instruction. Topics include interdisciplinary research contributions to understanding the reading processes, phases of learning to read, an overview of the five themes of reading, play-based learning, and developmentally appropriate practices to support foundational literacy skills with emphasis on oral language, print awareness, letter knowledge, phonological and phonemic awareness, and phonics. The course also introduces reading assessments to inform instruction and reading difficulties, including dyslexia. Additionally, it focuses on asset-based pedagogies that build on students’ home knowledge, social-emotional development, and prior experiences. Open to Early Childhood Education Credential majors only.
